The use of Herbal Medicine in Long Covid and Chronic Fatigue

Functional herbal therapy (meaning the clinical application of herbal medicine) can provide a level of support and healing which can help address some of the key health components that make up the puzzle of long Covid.   Adaptogens are natural substances that help the body adapt to stress and restore balance.  There are several medicinal herbs that have been identified as having adaptogenic properties.  These herbs may offer benefits in managing Long COVID symptoms due to their stress-modulating and immune-boosting properties.

Some commonly studied adaptogenic herbs and their potential roles in managing Long COVID symptoms include:

1. Withania (Withania somnifera):

Benefits: Excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, Withania (also known as Ashwagandha) may help reduce fatigue, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being. It is also used to reduce stress and anxiety, which can be significant issues for Long COVID patients.  This herb works by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates the body's stress response.

2. Rhodiola (Rhodiola Rosea):

Benefits: Often used to combat fatigue and improve cognitive function, Rhodiola can be beneficial for Long COVID patients experiencing brain fog and physical exhaustion.  It works by enhancing mental performance and reduces stress by influencing cortisol levels and increasing the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.

3. Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus):

Benefits: This adaptogenic herb is known for boosting energy levels, enhancing mental clarity, and supporting the immune system.  It works by helping the body adapt to stress by acting on the adrenal glands and regulating cortisol production.

4. Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus):

Benefits: Astragalus is known for its immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help improve resilience and recovery, supporting the body's ability to fight off lingering infections.  It works by stimulating the immune system and enhances the production of white blood cells, which are crucial for fighting infections.

Herbs with adaptogenic properties may offer significant benefits for individuals suffering from Long COVID by helping manage stress, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction.  However, it is important for patients to consult a registered medical herbalist before starting any new treatment, as the interactions and side effects of any herbal medicine can vary based on individual health conditions and existing medications.  While adaptogen herbs have shown promise in managing symptoms related to stress, fatigue, and immune function, more research is needed to specifically evaluate their effectiveness in treating Long COVID.
